Debian GNU/Linux: a champion of performance and ecology!
A remarkable study conducted by Hans and Erwin compares the performance of the same software running on the same hardware, but with different operating systems (server versions).
The software tested, Percipion, is based on a natural language understanding service that is particularly CPU-intensive. The tests consisted of running 1,000 iterations on each system.
The results are surprising: Ubuntu completed the calculations in 17 minutes and 51 seconds, FreeBSD in 8 minutes and 28 seconds, while Debian took only 5 minutes and 23 seconds!
Initially, we thought that FreeBSD would be the most efficient, but Debian far exceeded our expectations.
These results have major implications. By choosing Debian, not only are calculations performed faster, but the duration of hardware resource usage is also reduced. This contributes to a more sustainable approach, in line with Green IT principles, by minimising the energy consumption of machines.
In short, this study demonstrates that a simple change of operating system can transform the performance and environmental impact of an application.
Debian GNU/Linux is thus establishing itself as a powerful and environmentally friendly solution capable of revolutionising the way we use our IT resources. A small adjustment for a big step towards greener computing!
